The Pending Water Crisis

GETTING READY FOR THE PENDING WATER CRISIS

The Colorado River shortage is coming. Next year, or maybe the year after that, but it will be here. And once shortage conditions begin, those conditions are most likely not to end.

Conservation, water banking, recycling, building moratoriums, and agricultural restrictions will help, but NEW WATER will help more.

WATER TRAIN CAN DELIVER BILLIONS OF GALLONS OF EXCESS FRESH, SPRING, OR RECYCLED WATER, DIRECT TO AREAS OF NEED.

THINGS WATER PLANNERS SHOULD CONSIDER:

  • Bureau of Reclamation will not let Lake Mead “crash”
  • Colorado River consumptive use will continue to grow
  • Mead continues to lose elevation, drought or no drought
  • Water shortages increase groundwater extraction
  • Groundwater recharge will become increasing difficult
  • “Drought Bowl” exodus from water-starved rural to urban
  • Conservation and recycling will not create a water surplus
  • New water sources will be difficult to develop or access
  • Diminished water supply devastates local economies
  • Aggressive, or armed seizure of water by scared citizens
  • Abolishment of senior water rights in favor of M&I rights first
  • Water rights and ownership may become unenforceable
  • Cost of water is no longer a consideration, availability is
